Some comments

I just read Kami's post on comment sections, and it inspired me to make a post for the first time in three months, so thank you!

Every time I have tried to make a blog for myself in the past, I would be disappointed if I didn't have a comments section. I figured it was something every blog needed, because why would I be on the internet if not to communicate?

From Kami:

Comment sections make it very easy to comment on stuff. That is the problem. Part of the reason discussion on bearblog is fairly civil compared to most other social media is the fact that there's no comments on most blogs.

And I know that may be obvious to some, but it isn't obvious to others, and certainly wasn't to me. We don't need to communicate for communication's sake. I'm reminded of how disappointed I was every time I got a comment notification for a Dreamwidth post just for it to be a "<3".1 Don't get me wrong, I still appreciated it, but I had hoped for more thorough engagement with my ideas, or at least mentioning a sentence that struck a chord.

For that reason I was brought around to the idea that emails are cool, actually. Every email I've gotten from a stranger online (which, to be fair, has been like four) has been memorable.2 In the far-flung future year of 2025, receiving a well-thought-out email from a real human being feels almost like opening a letter. Which is to say, it feels really good. Someone put real time into making real decisions to send those words to you.

So uh. Email me :) (If you feel like it). cobyzaby@gmail.com

  1. Dreamwidth doesn't have a "like" function, but it does have comments, so we made do.

  2. Even if I take months to reply, I've read it, and I'm thinking about it, and I deeply appreciate it. I just have social anxiety.
